Have a Fun Fall Hike with

“Walking in a Wiener Wonderland”
This Year Celebrating Wieners and Wiener Dogs

CINCINNATI, OH – October 1, 2016: The Germania Society of Cincinnati — home of Cincinnati’s oldest and most authentic Oktoberfest and Christkindlmarkt — brings you another German tradition this fall: Volksmarch, on Saturday, October 22 at 9:00am at Germania Park in Colerain Township.

Volksmarches are a post-World War II German cultural phenomenon that has spread across Europe and the world: a noncompetitive, social, leisurely walk in nature. Fun for the whole family and open to the public, this year’s Germania Volksmarch celebrates Wieners and Wiener Dogs: your dog — especially Dachshunds — are welcome on the trail on a leash and in the Biergarten (but not in the Klubhaus).

About Germania Volksmarch:

The Germania Volksmarch Gruppe encourages members and friends to get out into nature for some exercise! A Volksmarch (people’s march) is a noncompetitive leisurely walk along a marked trail. The goal of a Volksmarch is to develop physical fitness, encourage good health, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow walkers. We work under the umbrella of the Ohio Volkssport Association (OVA) and the American Volkssport Association (AVA), and walkers can accumulate credits and awards after successfully completing their walk. Participants walk along a trail through the Germania property, and can enjoy an authentic German lunch and beverages at the Germania Society clubhouse.

Volksmarches originated in Germany in 1968. They became very popular with the American military that were stationed in Germany at that time. Veterans returning to the United States wanted to continue these walks and founded the American Volkssport Association in 1976. In keeping with the tradition of all German cultural events, the Germania Society started the Germania Volksmarch Gruppe in 2005 and sponsors two walks each year, one the fourth Saturday of April and one on the fourth Saturday of October. Both a 5k and a 10K walk are offered.
